Dancing Colors: Making Sound Visible by Fabian Oefner

Published 4 years ago

Zurich-based photographer Fabian Oefner came up with a creative way to make the sound waves visible. For his Dancing Colors photo series, Fabian attached a thin membrane on top of the loud speakers, and put some colored salt on it. Once the music starts playing, the salt starts vibrating, and it’s then a matter of a split second to capture the shapes it creates.

To get the shots, Fabian attached the microphone to the flash system, which would go off every time the mic pics up a sound. The work is extremely time-consuming because of all the cleaning up afterwards, but the results are definitely worth it!
