Lines Dividing Rich And Poor Photographed With Drones

Published 8 years ago

There’s no doubt that Africa has its fair share of problems, one of the big ones being the enormous gap between the rich and the poor. And thanks to photographer Johnny Miller we just got some very visual proof of that.

For his new project “Unequal Scenes” the Cape Town-based photographer used a drone to give us a bird’s eye view on the lines of inequality so clearly drawn in the Republic of South Africa.

Discrepancies in how people live are sometimes hard to see from the ground. The beauty of being able to fly is to see things from a new perspective – to see things as they really are,” writes Miller. “Looking straight down from a height of several hundred meters, incredible scenes of inequality emerge.

As Miller explains, some of the communities were “designed with separation in mind,” while others grew “more or less organically.” It is what remains of the Apartheid policies, when racial segregation was enforced by law. It’s been 22 years since these policies were eliminated, but in reality, “many of these barriers, and the inequalities they have engendered, still exist.
