1946 New York Subway Captured By 17-Year-Old Stanley Kubrick
Before Stanley Kubric knew he was going to make some of the best sci-fi and horror movies ever (like A Clockwork Orange and cult indie classic The Shining), his first claim to fame came as a 17-year-old photographer for LOOK magazine. He took these pictures in the New York subway system over two weeks in 1946.
His photos give us a glance into the everyday commutes of people in a bygone era. If you replaced the ubiquitous newspapers with smartphones, you‘d see a picture not unlike the one many subway passengers see today.
During his tenure at LOOK, Stanley Kubrick took more than 15,000 photos (most of them unpublished) over 129 assignments, drawing inspiration from the people and city around him. One can see the spark of greatness that would one day make his pictures move.
