18 Boundary Pushing Frame Experiments By Viral US Artist Andrew Scott

Published 1 hour ago

Figures of children and adults attempt to break free from the constraints of the very source they have materialised from in Andrew Scott’s art. ‘The Frame Experiments’, as they are called, visually depict some subjects who appear to want to break, burn or distort the simulated cage that binds them within the confines of a limited space. Meanwhile, other illustrated inhabitants of the unusual portraits attempt to playfully interact with the physical frames instead.

The American artist has been celebrated for his work online, after going viral and earning over one billion views on social media. Scott’s signature style of using the frame of the art piece as an integral part of the composition enhances the emotional force of the image. Popular pieces like The Boxer and Firework display the artist’s ability to evoke themes of tension, release and empowerment by extending the action beyond the traditional picture plane.

The interdisciplinary artist has released three collections to date titled, Parallel World, Breakthrough and Frame of Mind.  In an interview with DeMilked, Scott revealed, “I started doing my frame experiments in late 2021 as part of my first solo show in a small public space in my hometown of Rochester, NY. It wasn’t until a year later that I posted the process online and they began to gain popularity”.

Fortunately, Scott’s decision to use social media paid off when he gained viral status online, and demand for his art has increased. But the journey there was not easy, though perhaps necessary, considering it may have heavily influenced his current success. Scott gave us further insight into the influences that inspired his unique approach to art, explaining, “The sentiment behind it was born out of my own personal struggles to break out of my old way of living, negative thought patterns, and feelings of inadequacy. This art truly is a reflection of my journey toward self-improvement and taking control of my own identity. The art was a subconscious manifestation of these feelings, not a conscious choice.”

It’s a creator’s burden to keep churning out fresh material, and Scott is no different, especially since his work has been in such high demand. When asked about how he keeps designing new concepts, Scott responded, “I spend most of my time thinking about new ideas. I have a note in my phone with hundreds of half-baked concepts. From there, I will try to flesh out the idea a bit more. When I’m feeling inspired by one, I will sketch it out and make a rough prototype. If I think it’s “show-worthy,” I will fully render it with graphite, charcoal, and pastel pencils.”

Scott explores themes of personal transformation, escapism, and loneliness through the invention of this new technique of merging form and materials. He invites viewers to approach life with the same limitless outlook as his subjects and the space they inhabit.

Shanilou Perera

Shanilou has always loved reading and learning about the world we live in. While she enjoys fictional books and stories just as much, since childhood she was especially fascinated by encyclopaedias and strangely enough, self-help books. As a kid, she spent most of her time consuming as much knowledge as she could get her hands on and could always be found at the library. Now, she still enjoys finding out about all the amazing things that surround us in our day-to-day lives and is blessed to be able to write about them to share with the whole world as a profession.

Got wisdom to pour?
