For over fifteen years, the renowned artist Mantra has been using his talents to create awe-inspiring murals that bring a touch of enchantment to urban landscapes. In a recent interview with DeMilked, the artist shared insights into his artistic journey and the profound significance behind his captivating butterfly-themed works.

When asked about the duration of his mural creation, the artist revealed, “It’s hard to believe but I have been creating murals for more than fifteen years. Recently, I have also started working with canvases in my studio, which is such a different practice. While painting murals allows me to engage with the community and neighborhood, working on canvases is a more introspective practice. I appreciate both.”

Butterflies hold a special place in Mantra’s artistic repertoire. Reflecting on his childhood fascination with the natural world, he explained, “During my childhood in France, I developed a deep fascination with the natural world, particularly birds and insects. Observing their behavior and interactions sparked my curiosity and nurtured my lifelong interest in insects.”

It was through close observation and study that Mantra discovered the symbolic and aesthetic beauty of butterflies. “I discovered that butterflies, with their delicate beauty and transformative life cycle, represent millions of years of evolution. The subject was fascinating to me,” he shared. As a result, he instinctively chose butterflies as the primary subject of his artwork, merging his passion as a naturalist and artist.

Mantra’s murals often cover entire buildings, creating an impressive scale for his works. When discussing his approach to working on such grand projects, he expressed, “I find great joy in creating murals on larger walls. They have a significant impact on their surroundings and provide great visibility. Of course, working they also come with their own set of challenges. Factors such as weather conditions, the height and risk, the texture of the wall, or even the aerial equipment can be problematic.”

However, Mantra emphasized the importance of good planning, preparation, flexibility, passion, and discipline in overcoming these challenges. By anticipating potential issues and arriving well-prepared, he ensures that he leaves with only good memories of the project.
