20 Intriguing Sculptures That Turn The Ordinary Into The Extraordinary

Published 10 hours ago

Los Angeles-based artist Amiee Byrne is renowned for her whimsical ceramic sculptures that transform everyday objects into playful art pieces. With a background in fashion styling and bespoke prop creation, Byrne’s work bridges the gap between functionality and fantasy, infusing ordinary items with a sense of humor and surrealism.

Byrne’s ceramic creations often reimagine common household items, turning them into quirky sculptures that challenge our perceptions. Her pieces range from potato chips and clay mops to other familiar objects, each rendered with meticulous detail and a touch of whimsy. This approach invites viewers to see the beauty and absurdity in the mundane, encouraging a fresh perspective on the objects that populate our daily lives.

In an interview with DeMilked, Amiee Byrne shared how her journey into ceramics began. “I moved to LA 7 years ago and was finding my feet, and had no car so spent a lot of time wandering around downtown LA,” she said. “I stumbled across a community ceramics studio and had a little peep through the window and felt intrigued. I signed up for a class and instantly felt connected.”

Her first ceramic experiment was inspired by a simple yet imaginative idea. “At the end of my first class, I asked the teacher if it was ok to make something different, rather than making pinch pots,” she explained. Armed with a crinkle cut chip tool, she aimed to create a potato chip hanging mobile to fill the space in her loft. “It absolutely did not work. It squished the clay and got stuck to the tool… BUT I continued to mess about with it… and managed to make my crinkle cut potato chips!” she recalled.

For Byrne, the charm of her ceramic sculptures lies in their ability to mimic familiar objects while introducing a playful twist. “There’s an unwritten list of requirements in my head that makes an object qualify. The ‘list’ changes daily though,” she said. She prefers objects that feel classic, as if they could be found in almost everyone’s homes. Byrne also enjoys playing with textures, making soft objects appear hard and cold through clay. “The mop is a great example,” she noted. “It’s lived in everyone’s lives at some point. It hides in a cupboard or, my favorite vision, slumped in a corner with splayed mop strands.”

Byrne appreciates the imperfections in her creations, seeing them as a second chance for the object. “I try and make the object defective in some way… I like to celebrate the flaws,” she said. She enjoys experimenting with texture and color, often using unconventional tools like potato mashers and toilet plungers to achieve realistic finishes. “I like to work out ways to create lifelike texture and color. Texture is everything to me,” she emphasized.

Byrne’s artistic process involves obsession, experimentation, and a touch of trial and error. “I’m kinda lazy and always hope my first version works out perfectly the first time, but that very rarely works out haha,” she admitted. Self-taught beyond her initial classes, she continues to learn every day through hands-on practice.

Amiee Byrne’s ceramic sculptures are a celebration of the quirky, the mundane, and the unexpected. By transforming ordinary objects into art, she challenges us to look at our surroundings with fresh eyes and a playful heart. Scroll below to see some of her stunning works.
