20 Times Delfino Fidel Turned Ordinary Items Into Unsettling Works Of Art

Published 1 hour ago

At first glance, a spoon is just a spoon. A toy is just a toy. A clock, a fork, a chair, all harmless objects that quietly fade into the background of daily life. But in the hands of Delfino Fidel, these familiar items are transformed into unsettling, thought provoking sculptures that blur the line between playful and disturbing.

Although it may seem like a recent evolution, Fidel explains that creating these kinds of works has always been close to his nature. “It feels like creating playful sculptures has always been part of my vital activities,” he shares. “However, only in recent years have I consciously focused on creating sculptures inspired by everyday symbols and subjects chosen for their symbolic value.” What makes his pieces especially compelling is that they do not rely on shock alone. They begin with an idea. “I am usually drawn to ideas that carry a spark, humorous, playful, or intuitive, that ignite in me a compelling urge to bring them to life as sculptures,” he says, adding that his goal is to invite viewers to engage emotionally, intellectually, and even philosophically.

For Fidel, the real magic happens long before any physical materials are assembled. “The most purely creative part takes place in the mind,” he explains, describing how he combines elements and meanings until a complete idea emerges. The physical construction follows, though even then, problem solving and imagination are essential to preserve the integrity of the original concept. We have gathered some of his most disturbing sculptures, striking works made from everyday objects that prove even the most ordinary things can carry unexpected depth, symbolism, and a slightly sinister edge.
