Fabian Oefner Freezes Colourful Strokes Of Paint In Resin Cubes

Published 1 day ago

Swiss-born Fabian Oefner’s sculptures are a unique ode to painting. He transforms the translucent beauty of the resin cube by enhancing it with delicate brush strokes floating within its depths. The vibrant swirls look like poetry in motion, as different colours merge with each other in a dynamic dance midair.

Oefner uses polymer substance which when poured into a mold in liquid form, creates a solid structure. His latest series, “Volumen”, is a set of twelve new works which explore the boundaries of painting. A statement from the artist explains how in previous experiments he “has manipulated paint using physical forces like gravity and centrifugal force and captured these ephemeral moments in photographs.”

In his latest series, the artist who know lives in California, U.S.A., has extended his experimenting to physical objects. Oefner elaborated, “By embracing the physicality of paint, [I] lift it from its flat, two-dimensional nature into a three-dimensional experience, challenging the viewer’s perception of both form and medium. These objects appear to oscillate  between transformation and permanence. The brushstrokes, suspended in resin, becoming lasting traces of movement, frozen in time.”

Oefner further divulged, “I have always been fascinated by the textural quality of paintings. For me, experiencing works like de Kooning’s Door to the River or  Pollock’s Lavender Mist has always been as much a tactile experience  as a visual one. These paintings are almost like sculptures to me. What I am doing is removing the canvas entirely and lifting the paint into  space, making its physicality completely tangible.”

Shanilou Perera

Shanilou has always loved reading and learning about the world we live in. While she enjoys fictional books and stories just as much, since childhood she was especially fascinated by encyclopaedias and strangely enough, self-help books. As a kid, she spent most of her time consuming as much knowledge as she could get her hands on and could always be found at the library. Now, she still enjoys finding out about all the amazing things that surround us in our day-to-day lives and is blessed to be able to write about them to share with the whole world as a profession.

Got wisdom to pour?
