15 Sculptures That Blur The Line Between Art And Motion, By Małgorzata Chodakowska

Published 24 hours ago

When you think of sculptures, you often imagine stillness—majestic yet unmoving figures carved in stone or cast in bronze. But Polish sculptor Małgorzata Chodakowska has redefined what it means to sculpt by fusing fluidity into form. Her works do more than just capture the eye—they come alive, quite literally, with water.

In an interview with DeMilked, Chodakowska reflected on her journey as an artist: “I’ve been involved in sculpture for over 40 years, and my fountains for about 20 years now. In the beginning, most of the sculptures were made of wood. I took up this particular form of art, sculpture, because I felt the need to share beauty and to talk about how beautiful a human being is, and most of all, their soul.”

Her words echo through her creations—each sculpture is not just a figure, but a spiritual representation, a celebration of the human form and essence. Whether carved from wood or cast in bronze, her art consistently expresses grace, dignity, and depth.

One of her most iconic techniques is drilling delicate, almost invisible channels through the sculptures to allow water to pour seamlessly, as if the stone itself were weeping or dancing. These are not fountains in the traditional sense; they are visual poetry in motion. Adding water to sculpture isn’t simply a matter of drilling holes and adding plumbing. It requires meticulous engineering, precise weight distribution, and a deep understanding of both the material and the mechanics. Yet Chodakowska makes it look effortless. Her use of bronze and wood, sometimes gilded, ensures durability while capturing subtle textures—making the water look like a natural extension of the sculpture.

Discussing her creative process, the artist told DeMilked, “The creative process is different every time, the idea flows suddenly as if from nowhere it is in my head and has to be realized, so first I make a drawing, then I weld a metal structure and put clay on it and model it. I am very happy to share the beautiful whole world.”
