Photographer Shows The Softer Side Of Pit Bulls To Encourage Their Adoption
In the photo series “Flower Power, Pit Bulls of the Revolution,’ Brooklyn-based French photographer Sophie Gamand set out to portray shelter pit-bulls in a different, brighter light, demonstrating their unquestionably sweet nature that shows itself if the dogs are treated right.
Dog shelters are full of many different breeds, but some are less likely to be adopted than others due to their unfavorable public image. In “Flower Power, Pit Bulls of the Revolution," Brooklyn-based French photographer Sophie Gamand set out to portray shelter pit-bulls in a different, brighter light, demonstrating showing us the unquestionably sweet dogs that they can be when treated right.
“I realized pit bulls were always portrayed in very urban, gritty photographs,” writes Gamand. “The imagery associated with these dogs is often harsh, very contrasted, conveying the idea of them being tough. In my opinion, this feeds the myth that these dogs are dormant psychopaths. So I decided to take the other route and portray them like hippies, soft fairy-tale-inspired characters, feminine and dreamy.”
All of these lovely dogs are waiting for their new owners in three rescue groups in New York City (see the link below the images). These photos are available for purchase in print, the proceeds of which will go to the rescue groups.
