30 Wholesome Signs By The Clackamas United Church of Christ

Published 6 years ago

Many people dread going to church – some think it’s boring, others don’t like listening to the same old sermons while another part just hates waking up early on Sundays. However, that is not always the case – just ask Pastor Adam from the Clackamas United Church of Christ. The pastor invites people of all races, religions and sexual orientations to his church and is actively spreading the message that God loves everyone through his wholesome church signs.

“I came to the Clackamas United Church of Christ about a year and a half ago and realized that we needed to get our message out into the neighborhood,” said Pastor Adam in an interview with Bored Panda. “People saw our building, but didn’t know what our values were. So we started a fundraiser for the sign and I started posting those messages.” Soon enough people started stopping by and thanking Adam for the messages – but he did not know what a huge impact they would have online.

“Amidst the pain of the world and all the hate, people are thirsty for something deeper. The truth of the Gospel is that all people are loved. The sin is when we start treating certain people and groups as if they are not loved,” says the Pastor. “Jesus was most critical of those who used religion as an excuse to marginalize others. We are merely seeking to follow Jesus in the best way we can.”

Only about 30 people were regularly attending the church when Adam first arrived. However, the hard work eventually paid off and that number started rising.

“I decided that we needed to be bold with our message of love and inclusion, especially for those who are marginalized especially by religion,” said Pastor Adam. “My goal is is to be part of a larger movement that is reframing or redefining Christianity so that it’s based on God’s love for all people, but especially those who are marginalized.”

“I just want people to know that God loves them and we love them and we’re for them. It sounds so cheesy but that’s the basic message!” says the Pastor.

Adam says that even the more conservative churches from the area have been accepting of his message. The only instance of criticism he received was when one guy approached him as he was changing the sign and told Adam he doesn’t understand the Bible. “But that’s been most of the criticism. Everyone else honks, or says ‘great job!’ It’s been very supportive,” says the Pastor.

“There is a big movement, not just in my generation but in all generations, of people looking for a more inclusive faith. We find it in Jesus,” says Pastor Adam.

One day, this guy just kind of figured - "I spend most of my time on the internet anyway, why not turn it into a profession?" - and he did! Now he not only gets to browse the latest cat videos and fresh memes every day but also shares them with people all over the world, making sure they stay up to date with everything that's trending on the web. Some things that always pique his interest are old technologies, literature and all sorts of odd vintage goodness. So if you find something that's too bizarre not to share, make sure to hit him up!

Got wisdom to pour?
