Maybe we were all a little too influenced as kids watching Beauty and the Beast. They gave us Mrs Potts, Cogsworth, and Lumière, and we all kind of fell in love with the idea of seeing faces on inanimate objects. While the cartoon relies on magic to give ordinary items human characteristics, we have to rely on other elements to create the same effect.
Pareidolia, as this tendency is called, refers to the psychological phenomenon of perceiving familiar, often human-like faces in random, inanimate objects. In some cases, the visual stimulus is so strong that people who notice these “faces” feel compelled to capture them for posterity. The ironically named “Things with Faces” Facebook page is a dedicated community space where people share such interesting finds.
