Dave Sandford is a man enthralled by the beauty of the lake Erie, it is the fourth largest of the Great Lakes in North America. It is 241 mile (388 km) long and 57 mile (92 km) wide, as well as being relatively shallow, with average depth of 62 feet (19 meters). The autumn winds make it act like an ocean more than a lake, and the unpredictable, treacherous waves have caused from 1,400 to 8,000 shipwrecks. Perhaps fittingly, and the Native Americans named the lake “cat.”
Sandford had been a professional photographer for 18 years, and sports photography had always paid the bills. But he wanted something more, and that's how he found lake Erie. On his shooting days at Port Stanley, Ontario, the temperatures range from -2 up to 14 degrees Celsius coupled with sustained wind speeds of 45-50km/ph, gusting 70-100+ km/ph. “It is days like these that most people stay away from the lake…” Sandford wrote on Bored Panda. “It’s days like these, when Erie comes alive, showing it’s true power. These are the days I can’t wait to get to the lake and create images!”
