Lene Kilde’s Metal Sculptures Reflect The Emotions Of Childhood Memories

Published 1 hour ago

Norwegian-born artist Lene Kilde reimagines poignant childhood memories through still-life sculptures crafted from concrete, metal, and even ‘air”. A hallmark of Kilde’s style is her innovative use of space as a material, alongside copper and mesh, which allows her to form the figures of her creations. These sculptures often evoke innocent childhood experiences, such as the swish of paint spilling out of a bucket swung clumsily by a child or a shy youngster seeking safety and guidance by clutching an adult’s hand. Interestingly, Kilde frequently leaves her designs appearing unfinished, inviting viewers to interpret them at their discretion.

From a young age, this contemporary artist felt a strong calling to sculpt, prompting her parents to build her a studio in their basement. Initially, she favoured wood as her preferred medium, but during a three-year scholarship from the Norwegian Art Council, she transitioned to using wire in her sculptures. Her unique artworks have been showcased by the Norwegian Broadcasting Network and displayed at the Akershus Hospital. Kilde’s work resonates emotionally with viewers, often stirring their childhood memories through her talent for visual storytelling. She concentrates on hands and feet in her art because she believes body language is a powerful form of communication, with our extremities playing a central role in our gestures. A facet we see featured heavily in her work, as shown in the gallery below.

Shanilou Perera

Shanilou has always loved reading and learning about the world we live in. While she enjoys fictional books and stories just as much, since childhood she was especially fascinated by encyclopaedias and strangely enough, self-help books. As a kid, she spent most of her time consuming as much knowledge as she could get her hands on and could always be found at the library. Now, she still enjoys finding out about all the amazing things that surround us in our day-to-day lives and is blessed to be able to write about them to share with the whole world as a profession.

Got wisdom to pour?
