10 Slow Stitching Embroideries By UK Mixed Media Artist Lesley Wood
Lesley Wood is an award-winning mixed media artist hailing from Durhuan. She calls herself a mixed media artist because she uses paint and thread amongst other materials to hand stitch and create her work. She claims that her inspiration stems from the cloth itself, which is usually a domestic or vintage fabric and her subjects are mostly figures and birds. The act of hand stitching these reclaimed fabrics and merging the traditional with contemporary elements creates a narrative that she often leaves to the viewer to interpret.
Woods began using stitching in her work during 2016. Initially she trained as a painter with a fine art degree and she progressed to creating textile art. Her works have been exhibited across the U.K. as well as internationally. She has been awarded several accolades including Hand & Lock Open Textile Award 2021, The Madeira Threads prize 2023 and The Embroiderers’ Guild Margaret Nicholson Award 2023. Woods is currently shortlisted for the Young Masters Art Award.
