Mitchell Funk Spent 50 Years Photographing The Changing Cityscape Surrounding The Chrysler Building
For the past fifty years, American photographer Mitchell Funk has documented the Chrysler Building from various angles and in different lighting conditions, embarking on a decades-long artistic project. Over its 95-year history, the Chrysler Building has become an iconic element of the New York City skyline, instantly recognisable by its distinctive architectural features.
Funk’s creative approach focuses on highlighting the structure’s enduring and omnipresent nature as the city evolves. Though once the tallest in the city, the Chrysler Building is now partially obscured by a growing number of high-rises. In a statement, Funk explained that his goal is to emphasise the building’s symbolic significance, not just its physical form. He sought out intense colour shifts, reflections, dramatic angles, and carefully balanced compositions to showcase the Chrysler Building’s majestic and lasting role within New York’s ever-changing landscape.
