20 Vibrant Nature Paintings By Jon Ching That Feel Almost Real

Published 2 hours ago

When you first encounter a Jon Ching painting, it’s hard to believe you’re looking at oil on canvas and not a vivid photograph of some yet-undiscovered species. His works breathe with a lifelike quality that blurs the line between reality and imagination, capturing the essence of nature in ways both familiar and fantastical.

Ching, a Hawaiian-born artist now based in Los Angeles, has been painting for nearly two decades. “I’ve been painting for the last 17 years and working in my current mode for more or less a decade,” he shared in a conversation with DeMilked. His dedication to the craft is evident in the astonishing precision and imagination that each canvas holds.

The artist’s journey began with a love for drawing. As he recalls, “I’ve always enjoyed and been passionate about drawing but saw that as the precursor to being a painter. It seemed that being a painter was the grownup version of being a drawer, so I set that as my goal and just kept going!” This playful yet determined perspective has carried him into a career that merges technical mastery with boundless creativity.

What sets Ching apart is not only his skill but also his deep engagement with the natural world. He describes his creative process as a dialogue with the environment: “My process involves a lot of time looking at nature. Hikes can take forever if I let myself just wander around and get close up to moss or flower petals or tree bark. I just fill my head and internal image bank with as much as I can. Then when I’m in the studio, my brain’s image library can make visual connections and spark ideas for new paintings.” At times, his work begins with a concept or a question he wants to explore: “The other way I work is by starting with an idea I want to express or a conversation I want to spark. That’s harder than merely making visual connections, but journaling and asking myself questions helps clear away blockages.” This thoughtful balance between observation and introspection allows his art to be both visually mesmerizing and thematically profound.

In an age of ecological crisis, Ching’s art feels like a call to wonder. It asks us not just to admire beauty, but to recognize responsibility. By blending realism with surrealism, he emphasizes that the boundaries we perceive between species, habitats, and even ourselves are far more porous than we imagine.

For those who pause long enough, Jon Ching’s brushstrokes reveal a truth we often forget: that nature is not out there, separate from us. It is within us, around us, and part of our every breath.
