Otama-Shimai Creates Amusing Illustrations Of Hamsters In Ancient Japanese Art Form

Published 15 hours ago

Otama-shimai uses digital art to bring to life Nihonga – an ancient Japanese art form. Her illustrations depict playful hamsters engaging in various mischievous activities. Each beautiful piece centres around a jovial hamster or more that delicately emulates the painstaking brush strokes and colour palettes of the Nihonga style. The talented artist told DeMilked, “I work on an LCD tablet from draft to completion. Sketches and drawings are done on paper with pencil, pen or brush.”

The traditional Japanese painting method that has influenced Otama-shimai’s artwork dates back to the mid-1800s. It’s characterised by the use of organic pigments and meticulous attention to detail when representing landscapes or animals. Otama-shimai distinguishes her renderings by incorporating contemporary elements intertwined with the classical elements of the painting style. Her images often feature everyday objects such as spectacles or high heels etc., creating a subtle contrast between tradition and modernism.

The Japanese designer has been working on these paintings for “only about three years”, she tells us; further explaining, “When I was a student, I studied Japanese paintings because of their unique painting materials and production process. Although the possibilities of incorporating digital elements into Nihonga were alluring, it would go against the teachings of my mentor, so I was reluctant. But one day, stuck in a creative rut, I decided to begin drawing digitally. It was just April Fool’s Day, so I decided to go out on a limb and do something against my will, and I had a lot more fun painting than I thought I would. That’s how it all began.”

Shanilou Perera

Shanilou has always loved reading and learning about the world we live in. While she enjoys fictional books and stories just as much, since childhood she was especially fascinated by encyclopaedias and strangely enough, self-help books. As a kid, she spent most of her time consuming as much knowledge as she could get her hands on and could always be found at the library. Now, she still enjoys finding out about all the amazing things that surround us in our day-to-day lives and is blessed to be able to write about them to share with the whole world as a profession.

Got wisdom to pour?
