Yulia Brodskaya, an acclaimed paper artist living near London, UK, has been mesmerizing art lovers with her intricate quilled paper creations for over 16 years. Originally from Russia, Yulia’s fascination with paper began during her childhood when she attended art school. After pursuing Graphic Design in Moscow, she moved to the UK to deepen her understanding of Advertising and Graphic Design, only to discover a unique calling that would change her life: quilled paper art.
The artist says, "Nature has always been my main source of inspiration. I created numerous compositions featuring various flowers, butterflies, fish, feathers, birds and other natural motifs; however I often feel an urge to expand my subject matter: it feels that depicting just a beautiful flower, a pretty shell or a decorative wave on its own is simply ‘not enough’… A human presence is needed to deepen the visual experience, the feel & emotional charge coming from the artwork, so I end up combining the natural motifs with human faces. I might create natural elements (flowers, birds) on their own when I need a quick break from the challenges of working on human faces, but I still think that create my best work when I combine the two together. I make more and more paper portraits these days – I seem to enjoy them more now when I have more experience depicting human faces using paper strips."
Yulia’s creative process is both intuitive and technical. She uses everyday items, such as cocktail straws and wooden toothpicks, to curl and shape her paper strips, relying on basic tools like scissors and tweezers to bring her vision to life. Her art has evolved from creating clear and defined lines with paper strips to using them in a more expressive way, “painting” with paper to achieve texture, depth, and color gradients that resemble real brushstrokes.
