15 Oil Paintings By Paul Schulenburg Depicting The Beauty Of Cape Cod

Published 24 hours ago

Inspired by childhood vacations, New Yorker Paul Schulenburg moved to Cape Cod in 1993. He recalls spending two summer weeks in the Cape from age five, falling in love with the ocean and the area’s artistic spirit, especially in Provincetown.

Schulenburg describes Cape Cod as a creatively inclined community, where visitors from around the world help support the cultivation of the arts. He sometimes paints on-site, uses reference photos, and holds group studio sessions with local and international artists, even going so far as to adopt innovative methods of collaborating via Zoom during the pandemic period.

Initially intending to become an art professor after studying at Boston University in the late 1970s, Schoulenburg instead worked as an illustrator for 15 years before returning to oil painting. In 2000, he began showing his works at Addison Art Gallery and has spent the past 25 years focused solely on fine art, with additional representation in New York.

His lifelong passion for art was encouraged by his mother and inspired by his grandfather, a hobbyist painter. His intrigue with art was sparked at the age of ten when he came across artworks by Edward Hopper that left a lasting impression.

In an interview with DeMilked, Schoulenburg revealed, “My grandfather was an oil painter. He was a somewhat accomplished hobbyist. I’m not sure he ever sold any of his paintings, but he gave them to family members. I grew up with a house full of oil paintings that my grandfather had done. My mother saw that I was interested, and she thought I took after her father and always encouraged me to pursue my passion. My parents never discouraged me from pursuing that interest. I am grateful for that. Admittedly, it can be a risky career pursuit, but I have made it work”.

Schoulenburg focuses on figurative pieces, notably Cape Cod and Maine fishermen, drawing inspiration from interesting compositions, colour, and narrative. He is also drawn to the design potential of interiors and storefronts for their architectural elements and dramatic shadows. He believes inspiration comes simply from showing up to work each morning and remains committed to painting after 25 years.

Shanilou Perera

Shanilou has always loved reading and learning about the world we live in. While she enjoys fictional books and stories just as much, since childhood she was especially fascinated by encyclopaedias and strangely enough, self-help books. As a kid, she spent most of her time consuming as much knowledge as she could get her hands on and could always be found at the library. Now, she still enjoys finding out about all the amazing things that surround us in our day-to-day lives and is blessed to be able to write about them to share with the whole world as a profession.

Got wisdom to pour?
