Japanese Artist Turns Pearls Into Miniature Skull Jewelry

Published 9 years ago

Pearls are tiny and precious, so, of course, there’s a craftsman that carves art out of them. And not just any kind of art – Shinji Nakaba carves pearls into tiny skulls. Well made skulls they are, although several bear an uncomfortable resemblance to the Crystal Skull from a maligned movie of the same name. Finally, a way for goths to wear pearls!

Shinji Nakaba is interested in pushing the envelope of glyptic (fancy term for “gem carving”) arts, which have roots in antiquity. However, it’s not all gems and precious metals in Nakaba’s workshop. As he writes on his website, he likes to deal with “something usual, such as aluminum beer can or plastic bottle, or even some discarded materials. I’m dealing all the materials equally no matter how precious they are.”
