50+ Rarely Seen Photos Of Russia In The 90’s Show Its Harsh Reality, And Some Of Them Might Shock You
1990’s was definitely a dark period in Russia as it just went through the dissolution of the USSR. A new time has come, a modern one, but it, first of all, it was the time of uncertainty. A visual artist Lise Sarfati was living in Russia through this difficult period so she decided to document the unpolished life of Russia during the 90’s.
She lived there from 1989 to 1998 photographing Moscow, Norilsk, and Vorkuta. Lisa’s first book Acta Est features 43 of her photographs, and it remains a powerful historical record of post-Soviet Russia. Her subjects vary from little children smoking charettes to young transexuals and teenage runaways interned in ‘re-education’ camps. Lisa’s work not only shocks the viewers but also displays the reality of the world that some of us didn’t even know had existed.
