20 Textile Artworks By Hélène Lamarche That Turn Wool, Beads & Pearls Into Magical Landscapes

Published 7 hours ago

French artist Hélène Lamarche creates textile landscapes that feel almost alive, where fibers bloom like moss and beads shimmer like dew. Using wool, pearls, and embroidery, she transforms everyday materials into tactile worlds inspired by memory, myth, and the natural cycles of growth and renewal.

In an interview with DeMilked, Lamarche shared that her series “Territoires portatifs” is deeply personal. “They are like intimate and tactile maps of the landscapes I carry within me,” she explained. “They emerge from memory, from moments of strong emotion felt in nature, fragile and precious fragments of time that seem both lost and still living beneath the surface.”

A visual artist and cinema teacher, Lamarche has explored many creative paths over the past thirty years. Textile work, especially embroidery, holds a special place in her practice. She often combines it with poetry, performance, and photography, experimenting with cyanotypes and stop-motion animation. Her international travels through Indonesia, Japan, and Vietnam have also shaped her approach to texture and storytelling. Her installation “La Femme aux cheveux d’or,” inspired by the myth of the same name, reflects her fascination with rebirth and transformation. “The golden threads that seem to grow through her chest are a metaphor for renewal,” Lamarche said. “Even in death, something of life always finds its way back.”

More recently, her “Petites mousses portatives” explore the tiny worlds of mosses she loved observing as a child. “For those who fall in love with mosses, the world brightens through a new and minuscule window,” she said, quoting writer Véronique Brindeau. “Through these works, I return to that childlike wonder.” Here are some of Helene Lamarche’s textile artworks that turn wool, beads, and pearls into magical, living landscapes. These are poetic reminders that even the smallest stitch can hold an entire world within it.
