15 Wooden Sculptures Of Twisting Books, Serpents And More By Christian Burchard

Published 3 hours ago

German-born wood sculptor Christian Burchard relocated to the United States in 1978. After an apprenticeship with a furniture maker in Germany, he studied sculpture and drawing at the Museum School in Boston, followed by further studies at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver, BC. While his initial focus was on furniture and interior work, he gradually moved toward woodturning and sculptural forms.

Burchard’s stunning sculptures embrace spontaneity and organic change. Committed to revealing the inner beauty and wild character of the material, he allows the wood to transform through its own movement, intervening only when needed with techniques such as burning or bleaching. Working primarily with green wood, especially madrone burl, he has honed a practice that relies on the wood’s natural warping and cracking as it dries to determine the final form.  The resulting vessels, bowls, serpents, boats, acrobats, and other forms are visually surprising and stunningly magnetic.

Shanilou Perera

Shanilou has always loved reading and learning about the world we live in. While she enjoys fictional books and stories just as much, since childhood she was especially fascinated by encyclopaedias and strangely enough, self-help books. As a kid, she spent most of her time consuming as much knowledge as she could get her hands on and could always be found at the library. Now, she still enjoys finding out about all the amazing things that surround us in our day-to-day lives and is blessed to be able to write about them to share with the whole world as a profession.

Got wisdom to pour?
