14 Wooden Sculptures Visually Depicting A Modern Pixelated Effect Created Using Traditional Carving Techniques

Published 18 hours ago

The mesmerising effect of watching something disintegrate seems hard to recapture in wood. However, Taiwanese wood carver, Han Hsu-Tung has mastered the art of using traditional techniques to create the pixelated effect in his 3D sculptures. The modern phenomenon of pixelation, a concept born of the screen generation, isn’t something we normally associate with something as natural and tangible as wood. However, the artist hopes to represent the visual nature of mankind’s current obsession with electronic devices through his thought-provoking pieces. His main goal is to draw focus to on the direction of the human civilisation in general. When multiple pixels appear in his artwork, the artist is visually trying to depict the disintegration of life itself.

When Hsu-Tung’s father passed away ten years ago, he conceived the idea for using pixelation in his artwork. He began his experiments with recycled blocks of wood to carve out his sculptures. Though he encountered a few difficulties along the way, he is currently at a point where he is working on including motors to his sculptures in order to offer viewers a kinetic experience of his pixelated experimental art pieces.

Shanilou Perera

Shanilou has always loved reading and learning about the world we live in. While she enjoys fictional books and stories just as much, since childhood she was especially fascinated by encyclopaedias and strangely enough, self-help books. As a kid, she spent most of her time consuming as much knowledge as she could get her hands on and could always be found at the library. Now, she still enjoys finding out about all the amazing things that surround us in our day-to-day lives and is blessed to be able to write about them to share with the whole world as a profession.

Got wisdom to pour?
