Photographer Proves That Wounded War Veterans Can Still Be Hot Calendar Models
Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have maimed many a soldier. Photographer Michael Stokes shows those veterans in a much different light with his Always Loyal series. He takes powerful and sexual calendar-style pictures of veterans posing with their amputated body parts and prostheses.
It all started Alex Minsky, a Marine veteran who had lost his leg to a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. Instead of a somber tone, Minsky went for confidence and pride. Soon, veterans were lining up to get their photos taken. Those pictures will appear in the book “Always Loyal.”
“Some people will say to me ‘Oh, this is really helpful to their self-esteem,’ or, ‘You’re making them feel like men again,’” Stokes said in an interview. “These guys have come to me very healed and ready to take the world on. I’m not giving them back their confidence. They already have it.”
