Jean Jullien Creates Amazing Interactive Installations Based On Childhood Gaming Fun
JUJU’s Castle is the first solo exhibition of renowned French artist Jean Jullien in China presented together with the Nanzuka Art Institute. The large-scale installations invite visitors to step into a playful and immersive experience based on Jullien’s enchantingly imaginative childhood escapes.
As a child, Jullien was captivated by the magical worlds found in role-playing games and comic books. The exhibition showcases over 80 paintings, sculptures, objects and intricate model designs based on childhood memories and inspirations, including French and Japanese manga, anime, classic video games, and the beloved tales shared by his uncle.

At its heart, JUJU’s Castle is designed as an imaginative journey for visitors, transforming the exhibition space into a grand castle. Here, each gallery room becomes a different dungeon, and viewers are cast in the roles of characters such as the warrior, elf, mage, and hero, facing humorous and whimsical monsters along the way. By infusing the exhibition with playful narratives, Jullien invites everyone to become the protagonists of their own fantastical adventure.

Reflecting on today’s world, Jullien believes that fantasy can serve as a refuge from the anxieties of modern life—whether through games, art, or storytelling. With JUJU’s Castle, he seeks to transform everyday reality into something more magical and comforting, reminding visitors of the power of escapism and creativity.

For Jullien, art is a way to counter negativity and spark joy, a philosophy that resonates in every aspect of JUJU’s Castle. This exhibition, held in Shanghai until the 26th of October, isn’t just his personal sanctuary—it is a welcoming realm of wonder and comfort for all.
