Dutch Artist Creates Real Clouds Inside Rooms That Last Only Seconds (15 Pics)

Published 7 hours ago

Dutch visual artist Berndnaut Smilde has captured the imagination of the art world by doing something that seems almost impossible: creating clouds indoors. Using a delicate mix of smoke, water vapor, and precise lighting, Smilde conjures up surreal, short-lived clouds that hover in empty rooms like ghostly apparitions. His most famous work, the Nimbus series, transforms ordinary interiors into dreamlike scenes with an ephemeral twist.

At first glance, Smilde’s Nimbus clouds look like something out of Photoshop. But they’re entirely real, formed by carefully controlling the indoor climate and releasing mist into the air. A smoke machine is used to produce vapor, while lighting and humidity are adjusted to ensure the perfect density and consistency. Once the conditions align, a cloud appears, floating gently in place for just a few seconds before it vanishes.

It’s in that brief, perfect moment that the magic happens. A photographer captures the scene, preserving a cloud that only existed in reality for the blink of an eye.

Check out some of the amazing photos from his Nimbus series below.
