Canadian artist mingles with stunning food-themed photography

Published 9 years ago

It is difficult to imagine that food can be so alluring without the desire to want to eat it. Lou, a B.C based photographer has taken food products and has created beautiful displays of dazzling colors, shapes, and forms at times in immediate relation with the human body. Her work is both enticing and captivating, and forces the viewer to always take a second look, and even third.

Her talent for the outlandish presents itself in every single one of her photographs, but more importantly tells the tale of an eccentric aesthetic quality. When asked to describe her work she usually replies with “acid house wife drag,” alluring to the curiously erratic styles of 80’s and 90’s drag culture.

In regards to these set of pieces, she has made it clear that they are part of an ongoing study in colors and shapes, but still part of a broader general concept of the role food plays in our lives. She is coming to terms with new ways to experiment with different styles, but still it is clear that she has either consciously, or subconsciously developed one on her own.

More specifically, she has mentioned that the silver fruits serve as a metaphor that healthy organic fruits and vegetables are becoming a luxury in our contemporary times. It is for this reason why there is a domination of “cheap fast eating,” as Lou calls it. Most families today are not able to eat ample fruits and vegetables simply because it is not affordable. Her plans are to eventually take all of these studies and amalgamate them into a series called “Eating from God’s silver platter.”

Food is an important aspect of our lives. Lou has made the obvious more clear by combining the human condition with our need and desire for food. In the end, the cliche might be that “you are what you eat,” but in this case it seems to be quite literal.
