A Proposal To Build 1,000 Ft Glass Walls Around NY’s Central Park
New York’s Central Park is probably the most iconic man-made park in the world. And it hasn’t changed for a while now. So recently designers Yitan Sun and Jianshi Wu offered a bold new concept of what could be done with this iconic landmark.
Winning design of eVolo‘s annual skyscraper competition offers a bold new idea of excavating the park to the bedrock and creating a 1,000-feet tall reflective glass wall around it. “With its highly reflective glass cover on all sides, the landscape inside the new park can reach beyond physical boundaries, creating an illusion of infinity. In the heart of New York City, a New Horizon is born.“
“The ambition is to reverse the traditional relationship between landscape and architecture, in a way that every occupiable space has direct connection to the nature,” – say the designers.

“Central Park, a 1.3 sq. mile urban park, [gives] New Yorkers a chance to escape the busy urban life. However, only a fraction of them can enjoy [it]”

To make it available to more people, designers want to dig down to reveal the bedrock beneath Central Park

The 1000-ft tall, 100-ft deep mega structure [would provide] a total floor area of 7 sq. miles, which is ~ 80 times greater than the Empire State Building

Its highly reflective glass on all sides would create an illusion of infinity – giving birth to a New Horizon

Got wisdom to pour?
pretty sure this would create an artificial Alpine Tundra. mostly exposed stone with pockets of moss being the only growing medium leading to short stunted trees. Very much like on Mount Mansfield in Vermont. your taking an already established ecosystem gutting it and expecting to replace it with an entirely new one. one that i might add is incredibly delicate
Terrible idea. Central park doesn’t need to be changed and less people can enjoy it if they were to dig down. What about those that can’t climb, are wheel chair bound or have smallT children? This is stupid.
That glass looks clean in the pictures… give it a day or two and it will have dirt and poop smeared over every inch. Otherwise, it’s a nice idea
