Brazilian Artist Creates A Comic Comparing What Life Is Like After You Adopt A Pet Vs. If You Don’t

Published 4 years ago

Ademar Vieira is a Brazilian illustrator, journalist, and screenwriter who creates beautiful watercolor comics illustrating various social issues. In one of his most recent comics, titled “The Choice”, the artist showed how adopting a dog can change your life – and if you still had doubts about adoption, this comic just might help you make up your mind.

“Every time we make a choice, we leave one timeline aside and enter another. So, this comic strip is called “The Choice” and you decide which timeline was chosen,” writes the artist under his Instagram post. “This strip I dedicate to all the animals that contribute to our mental health during the quarantine.”

In a recent interview with Bored Panda, Ademar said that he started creating comics early in 2020 as a way to exorcise his demons during a difficult phase he was going through. Once he started posting them, the artist realized that many people identified with them themselves. “I received good feedback and then I continued to expose the things I was feeling and the audience got bigger,” explained Ademar. “When I recovered from the bad phase, we were in the coronavirus pandemic, meaning everyone was going through a bad phase, so I continued to explore the problems people around the world were going through. Now I have used the strips to express my opinions on some issues that I consider relevant, whether personal, social, or political.”

Ademar says he couldn’t believe it when one of his comic strips went viral in Latin America back in June. “Famous people and profiles came to talk to me and congratulate me and that left me in the clouds, but it also brought the weight of responsibility,” says the artist. “Now, I was no longer making strips just for me and my friends, people from different countries were also seeing me. I was very happy that the public showed me a path to be followed as an artist and I want to follow that path to see what else is good.”
