Artist Kendra Haste Uses Nothing But Wire To Bring These Wild Animals To Life (20 Pics)

Haste builds her sculptures from the inside out, layering wire to form muscle, texture, and movement. “Wire, like cast iron, holds a tension between strength and fragility,” she says. That balance runs through every piece.

Her most recent exhibition, Big Bad Wolf, at the Ornamental Cast Iron Museum in Germany, explores themes of rewilding, conservation, and biodiversity. Featuring life-size sculptures of wolves, boars, deer, lynx, and birds, the show draws attention to the reintroduction of species like the wolf in Europe, a topic still politically charged. “I want to question the idea of the ‘big bad wolf,’” Haste explains. “Are they really a threat, or part of restoring balance?”

The wire she uses is made from mild steel, connecting her work to the museum’s cast iron heritage. Installed among 19th-century hunting relics and ornamental displays, her animals appear to reclaim the space, their raw presence sparking reflection on how we view and shape the natural world.

With each sculpture, Haste invites us to confront wildness, not as something to fear or tame, but as something to understand, respect, and perhaps welcome back.
