Ballet is often thought of as an art form rooted in tradition, with elegance, symmetry, and timeless discipline. But Australian aerial photographer Brad Walls has taken this centuries-old dance and reframed it, quite literally, from above. His latest series of photographs reveals ballet in a way we rarely get to see, transforming movement and form into breathtaking patterns of light, shadow, and geometry.
In an interview with DeMilked, he revealed, “The aim of the project was to disrupt traditional ballet photography, shifting its focus from shooting individual dancers to photographing the ballet corp. Most ballet photography focuses on a singular dancer in a very dramatic pose. To me, the beauty of ballet is rather opposite, it’s delicacy and teamwork.” Walls is known for pushing the boundaries of aerial photography, capturing everyday subjects like swimming pools, architecture, and now dance, with an artist’s eye for composition.
His creative process is well thought out and diligent, leaving nothing up to chance. “There’s no better feeling for an artist seeing a project through from conception to completion. It’s a fulfilling experience,” he explains. For lovers of photography, art, or dance, this series is a reminder that innovation often comes from changing our viewpoint.
