15 Stunning Portraits Of First Nation Boys With Their Braids, As Captured By Angel Horn

Published 2 months ago

For some indigenous cultures, braids are a symbol of strength and wisdom for men. Their long braided hair reflects their identity. However, sometimes young boys become victims of bullying due to their unique long locks. To avoid these unwanted occurrences, a photographer named Angel Horn started a social campaign to spread awareness about braided hair in indigenous cultures. Angel, who has been a full-time photographer for the past 5 years, specializes in doing photoshoots for newborns, maternity, family, themed sessions, weddings, and awareness campaigns.

Her portrait series “Boys with braids” has received global praise for showcasing the beauty of long-haired boys and encouraging people to embrace their culture. In an interview with DeMilked, the photographer revealed that she was approached by another mom to do a project for boys with braids. “As I’ve done lots of other awareness campaigns and 3 of my own boys have long hair I immediately said yes! This is such an important campaign for so many reasons…anti-bullying, normalization, cultural awareness but also each child/boy/man has so many reasons for their long hair..some because they honour our ancestors who were not allowed to wear their hair long in residential schools, some because it connects them to the earth, some for spirituality, strength, resilience, to decolonize ….each and every participant has immense pride in their hair, the ones that have just started and the ones who have been growing it for years,” she said.

The photographer further added, “Awareness campaigns in general are some of my favourite photo shoots. Either I have an interest in a topic or I am approached by an individual or organization to do a campaign, then I decide on the kind of background i would like…but the shoot itself is where i see how I’ll work the campaign, for boys with braids the pride they had to be photographed to show off their hair, the happiness to show me and tell me how long it is, for most of them it’s a strong symbol of their culture! I absolutely love to see my subjects shine, so see them happy with pride! to be able to be who they are, it’s always an honour for me to capture that.”
