“A Is For Adorable”: The Catphabet By Người Đá

Published 12 months ago

Meet Pham Minh Hoàng, aka Người Đá, a self-taught freelance artist who has been creating illustrations for the past five years. His inspiration comes from simple and daily things in life, as he loves discovering new perspectives on the way we see things. In a recent interview with DeMilked, he talked about his latest project, “The Catphabet,” and how it all started.

When asked about his popular series, “The Catphabet,” the artist explained how his two mischievous cats inspired him. He said, “The inspiration comes from the struggles with my 2 cats everytime I try to focus on my work at home. They would lie on my keyboard, send my partner silly texts, turn off my PC before I am able to save my work, knock my glass of coffee off the table, tear my shoes, chew my phone cable, break my headphone in half….. anddd I still love them so much! For a moment, I realized that despite all the destruction they may cause, the flexibility in their posture can be very potential in creating shapes, and the scenarios they make around my working desk and the house is something I can actually work with!”

When asked about his creative process, Người Đá revealed that he didn’t sketch out the whole project first. Instead, he started with one letter at a time and was able to complete one or two letters a day. However, some letters proved to be more challenging and took him days or even weeks to complete.

Overall, the project took him three months to finish. He further elaborated, “I was so happy and excited when all the 26 letters is done, but it’s the process of making them is what matters to me most, because it’s the time when I and my 2 cats developed very special connections: not just adorable pets, they make me feel like friends, co-workers, and family. And after the project is released, it feels like me and my friends, even strangers from all over the internet who treasure their pets, is getting closer to each other through a mutual feeling: love!”
