18 Fascinating Photos That Appear To Blur The Boundaries Of Reality
Erik Johansson’s photographs invite us to question reality, as blurred boundaries and mirage-like visuals fuse seamlessly with the real world. His incredible skill lies in manipulating images to be both believable and fantastical at once, holding viewers’ attention as we attempt to unravel what’s real. The subtle balance between illusion and reality makes it challenging to pinpoint where one ends and the other begins. A closer examination reveals not only striking visuals, but also a layered irony about life itself. These images unlock boundless imagination and encourage thoughtful reflection as viewers follow their visual stories.
Johansson began digitally altering photographs in 2000, starting as a hobby and evolving into a complex art form. He recalls, “I always liked to express myself visually. When I got my first digital camera 25 years ago, I felt I’d found my medium. Surrealism wasn’t my plan, but modifying reality led me there.”
Johansson describes his process as starting with a simple sketch. From there, he seeks out the right locations and people for each photo. The planning phase is the most time-consuming, but if done well, assembling the final image is easier. Johansson avoids AI and computer-generated elements, instead relying on creative solutions and homemade props to realise his vision. Each image is a complex combination of layered photographs that he handles solely, even though it’s time-consuming. He produces approximately ten new works each year, and we’ve shared a few in the gallery below.
