6 Stunningly Beautiful Artworks Of Sri Lankan Flowers, Animals And People

Published 1 day ago

Born on a tropical island and cradled by lush greenery, Sri Lankan artist Ishan Wimaladharma draws deeply from the landscapes, people, and rhythms that shaped his childhood. The colours, textures, and stories of his homeland find their way into his canvases as vibrant visual representations of his heritage.

Wimaladharma’s work is a celebration of Sri Lanka’s spirit. He seeks to translate the essence of local flavours, both literal and metaphorical, into a rich visual language. His paintings are alive with the people, culture, flowers, and animals that are unique to the island, each element carefully woven into a larger narrative of place and identity. Through these works, Wimaladharma invites viewers to step into a world where tropical light, memory, and tradition converge in paint.

Primarily working with oil on canvas, Wimaladharma also explores acrylics, mixed media, and installations. His relationship with art began early; as a child, any free moment after school was spent drawing and painting, quietly cultivating the skills and imagination that now define his practice.

Reflecting on his influences, he explains, “Since I was in school, I was really attracted to famous paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and the art of the academic realism period. They mostly focus on figurative art, which is also my primary focus. My art is also inspired by great Sri Lankan artists such as Lionel Wendt, J.D.A. Perera, David Paynter, and Tudor Rajapaksha. Through my art, I attempt to represent Sri Lankan ideal beauty with its own identity: the brown skin tones and the legacy of our ancestors.”

Shanilou Perera

Shanilou has always loved reading and learning about the world we live in. While she enjoys fictional books and stories just as much, since childhood she was especially fascinated by encyclopaedias and strangely enough, self-help books. As a kid, she spent most of her time consuming as much knowledge as she could get her hands on and could always be found at the library. Now, she still enjoys finding out about all the amazing things that surround us in our day-to-day lives and is blessed to be able to write about them to share with the whole world as a profession.

Got wisdom to pour?
