20 Sand Sculpture Masterpieces By Italian Artist Leonardo Ugolini
As kids we spent countless hours under the scorching hot sun, building castles in the sand. Only to watch it wash away in the water, blow away in the wind, or suffer another hazard that ignominiously brought the whole creation tumbling down.
Leonardo Ugolini is a sand sculptor who battles the temporary nature of his chosen material of creation. Regardless, he sculpt monumental medieval castles, ancient temples and even some architectural buildings with pop-culture references from the fragile material. The creations are meticulously sculpted by hand using specialised tools that aid the artist in sculpting every curve, arch and minute detail of his masterpieces.

Speaking to DeMilked, Ugolini revealed that his fascination with sand sculpting began as one can imagine, during his childhood. He explained, “Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a deep passion for sandcastles. During the summer, I would spend entire days by the sea building my little castles. I can say that I began pursuing this activity more seriously in 1995, when I started taking part in small competitions in Italy. From that moment on, as I rediscovered and nurtured this passion, I never stopped”.

When asked about the influences that inspired him to pursue sand sculpting as an art form, Ugolini divulged, “As a child, I drew inspiration from the world of fairy tales, stories filled with castles, fantastic buildings, and imaginary creatures. Japanese animated series also had a strong influence on me, with their monsters and extraordinary characters. As I grew older, I became more and more fascinated by the expressive potential of sand: an ephemeral and humble material, yet incredibly generous. It allows for great creative freedom, quick execution, and it’s available in abundance, which means there are no limits to your imagination. That feeling of boundless possibility is what continues to inspire me to this day”.

Speaking about his creative process Ugoloini extrapolated,”My creative process can vary greatly depending on the type of project I’m working on. It all depends on how clearly the subject is defined and how much creative freedom I’m given. When I have more freedom, I can really explore my imagination and create works that wouldn’t normally be requested, both in terms of subject matter and in terms of composition, complexity, or construction techniques. I might experiment with extreme perspective to create a sense of vertigo, abstract elements, or a combination of both”.

Though the process of sand sculpture may seem straightforward, attempting to recreate such monolithic structures requires some forethought, according to the artist. Ugolini elaborated, “The subject often depends on the initial input, but when creativity is the main driving force, everything changes. In these cases, I usually start with a sketch, which can be more or less detailed depending on the idea and the degree of freedom. Once the concept is defined, I move on to preparing the sand mound, which is a crucial technical step: it must be compacted very well, taking into account the available time, the quality of the sand, the size of the sculpture, and the environmental conditions. Working indoors or outdoors makes a big difference”.

Ugoloni further expostulated, “All these practical aspects deeply influence the final sculpture, which makes it hard to define a single, rigid process. That said, the general approach usually follows these steps. Then come the tools: some are very specific, designed for refining the tiniest details. The world of sand sculpture is truly fascinating, full of challenges and inspiration, a world where you never get bored”.
