17 Beautiful Photos Of Marilyn Monroe On The Beach From The Year 1957

Published 5 years ago

You don’t need to be a fan to know who Marilyn Monroe was but just in case you don’t, she was a famous American singer, actress, and model who became extremely popular back in the 50s and 60s with millions of fans both in the States and abroad. And even though the actress passed away back in 1962 at just 36 years old, she has remained a major pop culture icon to this day.

Throughout her career, countless photographers took photos of Marilyn but it was Sam Shaw that took one of her most iconic photoshoots. He was a close friend of the actress and organized a beach photoshoot of her back in 1957. Marilyn was pregnant at the time but, sadly, had a miscarriage a month later.

The photographer, who described Marilyn as a “beautiful without makeup and in her spirit as a person”, took the photographs in New York’s Amagansett Beach. It was a warm and breezy day and you can see the actresses hair flowing in the wind.

Shaw was a true New Yorker, having lived his whole life in the city. The man started from the bottom and slowly made his way to the top as one of the best-known celebrity photographers of the time. He loved music, painting and was an avid political and social activist.

He took many iconic photos, including the poster for A Streetcar Named Desire that shows Marlon Brando in a ripped shirt. Oh, and remember the iconic photo of Marilyn Monroe having her dress lifted by the wind? It was also Shaw that took the photo.

Marilyn Monroe, born as Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles, spent the majority of her youth in foster homes before marrying at just 16 years old. She worked at a factory where one day a photographer noticed her and her career was born.

Even though the star lived a fabulous and luxurious life, she still struggled with depression and anxiety. She ended her life in 1962 after overdosing on barbiturates, although some people are skeptical whether that’s what really happened.
