10 Pics Of Mixed Media Art That Feel Both Intricate And Empowering, By Christine Kim

Published 1 day ago

Christine Kim’s artwork doesn’t just hang on a wall. It flows, expands, and breathes. Using a combination of watercolor, graphite, and meticulously cut paper, she creates mixed-media collages that are both intricate and emotionally powerful. Her regal female figures seem to emerge from delicate patterns, embodying a quiet strength and complexity that draws you in.

Christine has been developing this unique art form for over a decade. “I have been creating these cut paper collages for over a decade now,” she shares with DeMilked. Her early explorations began during her Masters program, a time of transition and creative rediscovery. “Traveling light from Toronto to Victoria, paper became my go-to material for its convenience and recyclability,” she explains. That period marked the beginning of her experiments in both traditional and digital collage, and it set the stage for the richly layered work she’s now known for.

What began as a tactile and intuitive practice has since evolved into a thoughtful, hybrid process. “Earlier in my career, I gathered ingredients for my collages—watercolour washes, paper cuts, and portrait illustrations—acting as my mise en place. Much of the work flowed intuitively,” Christine says. Today, her method is more intentional: “Nowadays, my process is more meticulously planned with a blueprint mapping out all elements and their integration. While there’s still room for spontaneity, it’s far more intentional.” She now blends digital tools with traditional materials, often using a cutting machine to handle intricate paperwork so she can devote more time to illustration, and preserve her hands.

The results are nothing short of captivating. Here are some of her mixed media pieces that beautifully showcase her vision, art that feels at once delicate and commanding.

For those inspired by her process and eager to learn more, Christine is currently developing a video course on her signature collage techniques.
