Mysterious Little Worlds: Aron Wiesenfeld’s “Playtime” Turns Post-It Notes Into Dreamscapes (15 Pics)
While most people reach for Post-It notes to jot down reminders, artist Aron Wiesenfeld transforms them into tiny portals of emotion and atmosphere. Best known for his haunting oil paintings, Wiesenfeld steps into the world of miniatures with Playtime, a series of black ink drawings on 3×3-inch sticky notes that explore mood, memory, and the passage of time.
In an interview with DeMilked, Wiesenfeld reflected on his artistic journey, “I was an art nerd in high school, always drawing during class. I got a job in comic books as a young adult, and worked for Marvel and Image Comics. Later on, I shifted my focus to oil paintings and showing in galleries.”
The idea for Playtime came from a friend’s unusual request: “A friend who collects art on Post-It notes asked me to do a drawing for him, and I liked the way it came out. I was trying to get a sense of mood and weather using just line work. It was really difficult, but it was a fun challenge. It made me want to see how far I could push the medium, and find out what was possible with those restrictions.”
His creative process, as he describes it, is free-flowing and rooted in observation: “I make a lot of very rough sketches, on printer paper, so they don’t feel overly precious to me, and I can feel free to draw all the silly ideas I have. Often the ideas are based on things I saw, or memories. I use those as jumping off points for paintings or more finished drawings.”
Despite the humble materials and small format, each drawing carries a strong emotional resonance, which is quiet, cinematic, and full of unanswered questions.
Aron Wiesenfeld is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to bring Playtime to life as a published book, featuring over 140 of these deeply felt ink drawings. If you’re moved by his work, it’s well worth a look.
Take a look at some of the most captivating pieces from Playtime. Each one is a stunning example of how much story, mood, and detail can be captured on something as simple as a sticky note.
