A Stitch in Time

Rima Day’s journey as an artist began just over two and a half years ago when she stumbled upon a technique that would redefine her artistic expression. In an exclusive interview, Rima shared, “I developed this technique 2 and a half years ago. So since then, I’ve been doing this. I am not sure if it is really embroidery – but I call it ’embroidery’ so people can understand easily.” This self-termed “embroidery” involves a meticulous interplay of hand needles and thread, which Rima skillfully weaves to create intricate and thought-provoking artworks.

From Costume to Canvas

Rima’s artistic evolution is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Prior to discovering her current artistic medium, she worked as a customer. However, the onset of the pandemic brought about a seismic shift in her professional path. “After losing my costuming work during the first year of the pandemic, I tried so many techniques to make art,” Rima explained. It was during this exploratory phase that she found solace and joy in hand stitching. “I felt like I could really express myself with them,” she added.

Intriguingly, the symbiotic relationship between the human body and the elements of nature serves as a wellspring of inspiration for Rima’s creations. She revealed, “As for the theme of my work, I was inspired by how the human body and elements of nature are so similar – blood vessels and tree roots, etc.” This juxtaposition of the organic and the anatomical lends her work a surreal quality that draws viewers into a world where boundaries blur and connections abound.

The Scarlet Thread of Symbolism

A striking feature of Rima’s work is her affinity for using red threads. When asked about this artistic choice, she shared, “I sometimes work with black thread but yes, mostly red. It is because red symbolizes love, life, and vitality to me. Also, red thread represents connection in Japan where I grew up.” This deliberate use of color imbues her pieces with layers of meaning, inviting viewers to explore the depth of emotion and interconnectedness that Rima seeks to convey.

The Artistic Alchemy

Peering into the creative process of Rima Day is akin to exploring a treasure trove of inspiration and imagination. “I guess I gather inspirations through my reading or traveling,” she mused. These inspirations are meticulously stored in what she aptly terms her “inspiration pantry.” “At some point, one of them wants to come out to bother me. Or sometimes, I open the pantry and look for what I can use. Then I experiment with it,” Rima elaborated. This experimental journey is a dance between inspiration and expression, where Rima seeks to distill her unique perspective into each piece.

The culmination of this artistic alchemy is followed by a phase of dedicated problem-solving. “To decide if it really feels like ‘my work’ at this point is crucial,” Rima emphasized. This introspective assessment ensures that each creation is imbued with her essence, transforming mere materials into a manifestation of her artistic spirit.
