Amy Horowitz Captures A Slice Of A New Generation In New Book “A Walk In The Park”
A Walk in the Park is a collection of texts and photographs recently released by award-winning photographer Amy Horowitz. After studying at the International Centre for Photography and exhibiting her work worldwide, she is now based in New York City, focusing on freelance projects and the launch of her first book.
The book includes 166 colour portraits of young adults on the verge of adulthood in NYC. Over five years, Horowitz photographed fleeting moments in Washington Square Park and the West Village, capturing vulnerability, self-expression, and human connection. Horowitz explains her approach: “As a photographer, I’m drawn to the stories behind the surface. This work is about being seen and seeing others—making time stand still in a moment of mutual understanding.”

Her portraits vary from full-length to close-up shots, featuring singles, couples, and groups. At first, her focus seems to be on bold presentation—unique hair, jewellery, tattoos, and clothing—but a closer look reveals authenticity and vulnerability. Guided by intuition, she seeks subjects who reveal their inner selves, giving her images emotional depth.

To supplement the photographs, Horowitz invited some subjects to write a sentence about themselves—details a stranger wouldn’t know. These notes, inscribed inside the jacket, provide further insight into her portraits.
– “Today is the first day I’m wearing my natural hair out ever, and the first time, in a long time, I’ve felt beautiful.”
– “My parents are both recovering addicts.”
– “I want to be loved so much but intimacy disgusts me.”
– “This is my first month in NYC, feel a little bit out of my comfort zone, but I know my life is changing.”

A Walk in the Park captures a generation coming of age, documenting the presence and identity of young people as they navigate change. More than just a generational record, the book is a testament to the connection between photographer and subject. As Horowitz’s debut, it marks a milestone for her instinctive, empathetic art.
