Mountains Of Water: Majestic Beauty Of Waves Captured By Ray Collins

Published 9 years ago

Most of us have witnessed waves crash on the surf. But Ray Collins is really interested in the wave before and during the crash – and that‘s how we get pictures of waves looking just like mountain peaks. Caught at the top of their cresting, the waves look like jagged, pointy rocks, rising high into the sky. The foam even looks like the bit of snow you‘d expect of a mountain ridge. And Ray‘s dedication to getting just the right angle and just the right wave only strengthens the illusion.

Surprisingly enough, Ray only picked up photography in 2008, to take pictures of his surfing friends. Something went right, and he found himself dedicated to taking stunning pictures, in the employ of many famous companies, such as Apple. Ray is interested in the transitive beauty of the waves, as well the interplay between water and light. As he states on this website, “freezing the ephemeral relationship between water and light is what drives and inspires him to peel himself out of bed in the dark each morning“.

Ray is a finalist in the Smithsonian photo contest this year. See our take on the contest here.
