Katharine Morling Tricks Viewers Into Believing Her Ceramic Sculptures Are 3D Paperlike Cartoons
Katharine Morling’s creative sculptures of everyday objects may look like they are drawn on paper, but they are made of porcelain, clay, wood and black satin. The ceramist uses an underglaze pen to create a 3D effect that is surprisingly duplicitous. While our minds know that we are looking at a real object before us, our eyes are deceived into believing that we are viewing a drawing.
The illusion is enhanced by the artist’s strategic use of black ink to create a cartoon effect. This unusual contrivance sets us on a thought-provoking journey to identifying our preconceptions about material and functionality. Scroll to check out some of her best works in the gallery below.
