Realistic Portraits Ironed And Folded From Tulle Fabric

Published 10 years ago

British artist Benjamin Shine creates large stunning portraits from a rather unusual material – tulle.

The artist carefully irons and folds the fabric, pleating it into amazing pictures, ranging from portraits of iconic stars to beautiful abstractions. The works are entirely single-coloured, but Shine’s precise technique helps him create multiple layers and shades that turn his tulles into vivid portraits with rich texture and depth.

“The idea of ‘painting with fabric’ led to the development of this technique where the portrait image is created through the intricate pleating and pressing of a single length of tulle fabric. The technique aims to utilize the translucent qualities of the tulle fabric to generate various gradients, tones and textures,” writes Shine.
