10 Movie-Inspired Embroideries By Emily Beer That Blend Cinema And Craft Perfectly
French artist Emily Beer proves that embroidery can be as expressive as film. With her needle and thread, she recreates iconic movie scenes, capturing light, movement, and emotion in delicate stitches.
“I never went to any art school,” the artist told DeMilked. “I was working as a movie costume designer when I felt the urge to pursue a new path. Getting in touch with embroidery opened my eyes to this incredible way of telling things.” A self-taught artist, Emily chose not to follow formal training that “would have restrained creativity.” Instead, she followed her instincts, crafting “small personal embroidered stories.”
Her process is intuitive and rooted in emotion. “Sometimes it’s the medium that inspires me, sometimes a technique I want to try,” she explains. She mixes embroidery, crochet, knitting, and weaving, letting fabric and thread guide her. “I never draw,” she says. “In my work, it’s the fabrics and threads that draw the line.”
Color is another language in her art. “I enjoy confronting them, seeing how they unite or fight,” the artist says. “Sometimes you may think they won’t match, but surprises arise.”
For Emily, embroidery is not just a craft, it’s grounding. “The round and repetitive movement calms me, like a personal meditation,” she says. “It keeps me in balance.” Influenced by fiber artists like Annette Messager and Louise Bourgeois, her work celebrates patience, storytelling, and texture. As Emily puts it, “Textile art is the one that makes the biggest impression on me. I can really lose myself in it.”
Here are some of Emily Beer’s stunning embroidered recreations of iconic movies, proof that even the smallest stitches can hold entire worlds.
