Atari, A Company That Made ‘Pong’ 40 Years Ago Is Making A New Console

Published 7 years ago

More than 20 years after their last video game system, Atari has made a surprise announcement about a brand new gaming console in the works. It’s called the Ataribox, and besides bringing all the classic Atari gaming goodness from 20 years ago, the company also teased that the device will sport the “modern internal specs” to keep up with the “current gaming content.”

So far the details are a bit scarce: “We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, features, pricing, timing etc.,” the company said. “We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring Ataribox to life, and to listen closely to Atari community feedback as we do so.”

But the company did share a couple pics of the new console’s exterior. It will come in two versions, the red-and-black variant with a glass panel on the front, and the vintage wooden finish for those aiming for a more classic Atari look. The console will feature 4 USB ports, HDMI and Ethernet ports, plus an SD card slot instead of the classic cartridge cut out.
