Artist Transforms Books Into Beautiful Sculptures (20 Pics)

Published 9 months ago

Emma Taylor has established herself as a masterful creator of awe-inspiring paper sculptures. Since 2012, Taylor has been breathing new life into books by transforming them into intricate three-dimensional artworks. Her stunning sculptures have captured the hearts of art enthusiasts worldwide.

Taylor’s journey into the world of book sculpture began during her school years when she was first introduced to the concept of using books as artistic mediums. Inspired by this innovative approach, she set out to develop her own distinctive style. In 2012, she created her very first book sculpture as part of a school project, and the experience ignited a creative spark that would shape her artistic path. The following year marked the beginning of her exhibitions, where she showcased her remarkable creations to a wider audience.

What sets her work apart is the profound understanding of repurposing and giving new life to old books. In an interview with DeMilked, the artist revealed, “An important element of my work is the act of repurposing and thereby giving new life to old books. I instantly know the right book as I can picture the sculpture as if it has been laying dormant just waiting to be given form. Sometimes I am inspired by a book I find or I will search for an appropriate book to complete an initial idea I’ve had.”

“Before I begin any 3D work on each sculpture I always start by drawing or with a watercolour study to get the shape of the form into my fingers. I then produce a model either with wire or cardboard, cover the form with strips of book pages and insert into the pages or cover of the book I’ve selected. I then begin adding all the details of the piece, whether that be feathers of a bird’s wing or individual bricks on an ancient building,” she added.
