Man Rents A Room In Amsterdam, Finds Out It’s Inside A Shipping Container Upon Arrival
Booking an Airbnb is always at least a little bit risky – sure, the photos may look nice but we all know they are easy to manipulate and the “spacious single room in the city center” can turn out to be a cramped box with a fold-out bed and a single tiny window. Or even worse – the room you booked isn’t even inside a building.
When Ben Speller was planning his trip to Amsterdam, he booked what he thought would be a nice home for a good price. Try imagining Ben’s surprise when upon arrival he realized his “clean home” is actually a shipping container on the side of the road.

The listing seemed like a great deal – clean apartment, private bathroom and a reasonable price of £100 – what more could you need?
Imagine Ben’s surprise when upon arrival he found out that his apartment is actually a shipping container
“We had already driven past the container three times in the taxi trying to find the place. We thought, ‘This can’t be it.’ But when we got out, it turned out that it was true,” said Ben in an interview with a Dutch news outlet. “We opened the door and looked inside, locked the door and left. Then we went to a hotel.”
Obviously, Ben decided not to stay inside the container. He booked a hotel that cost him an extra £230
Even though the news outlets, Airbnb representatives, and even the district manager tried finding the owner, he was nowhere to be found.
Airbnb fully refunded Ben and even compensated the hotel fee

“We have removed the host and listings from our platform,” said a spokesperson for Airbnb. “Misrepresented or fraudulent listings have no place on our platform, and our team works hard to constantly strengthen our defenses and stay ahead of bad actors.”
The shipping container has since been removed
